Assessment details
This assessment is designed for you to critically reflect on and demonstrate your understanding of the barriers and enablers to recovery-oriented and trauma-informed practice.
The assignment asks you to focus on ONE of the following key issues in health services that have been identified by people with lived experience and health professionals as a barrier to recovery-oriented and trauma informed care and practice:
1. Re-traumatisation of people with lived experience in mental health services e.g. via coercive practices
2. Lack of choice and voice of people with lived experience in mental health services
Once you have chosen an issue to focus on, you will need to search for literature on the topic - you can also use literature listed in this subject. Make sure you also read study guide 3 and watch lectures in week 5 and 6 to understand key concepts related to this assessment.
Structure your assignment using the following headings, and consider the suggested word limits as guides (the total word limit is 1500 +/- 10%):
Introduction. Introduction to the topic you are focusing on and what you will cover (suggested 100 words)
Summary of the Issue. This is a critical summary and should show your understanding of why this issues is considered a barrier to recovery-oriented and trauma-informed practice by people with lived experience, health professionals and researchers. You will need to draw on literature for your critique. You can use literature from the subject as well as literature you have found through your own searches. You are demonstrating your comprehension of the issue and impact on on recovery-oriented and trauma-informed practice (Suggested 300 words)
Critical review of best practice. Critically discuss best practice in regard to your chosen issue. You will need to draw on literature for your critique from the subject and your own searchers. You are demonstrating you ability to critically discuss best practice in regard to the issue you have chosen. Remember, to critique something does not necessarily mean to find flaws in it, engaging critically with an idea means reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of approaches. You need to build an argument and take a position on best practice based on your critical review. This should be evidence based, which can include drawing on quantitative, mixed method and qualitative studies. Although quantitative studies might be considered more rigorous, qualitative studies can provide an important discussion of best practice as determined by people with lived experience or health professionals. (Suggest 450 words)
Statement summary of best practice. You need to make a one-two sentence summary statement of your position on best practice based on your critical review. In the previous section, you may have argued for several strengths and weaknesses to different approaches, however your assignment needs to focuses on just one approach. (Suggested 50 words max)
Reflecting on barriers and enablers. In this section, you need to critically reflect on other potential barriers and enablers to best practice that you have stated. Explore the extent to which best practice approaches are impacted by barriers and key ways forward, including, in your view, what would be enablers to recovery-oriented and trauma-informed practice. This section needs to draw on literature from the subject and from your own searches. Remember, you need to reference all your ideas. Draw on literature rather than lectures and study guides. However, you may find that lectures and study guides support your thinking or list sources that are useful. Again, do not make a series (or list) of points, we are asking you to write an argument about the extent of the barriers and possible solutions (enablers). (Suggested 500 words)
Conclusion. Sum up, explain the key issues identified, your position on best practice and your reflection on barriers and enablers to best practice. Your conclusion should not introduce new material (Suggested 100 words)
