ASSESSMENT BRIEF CONTEXT AND OVERVIEW
NOTE: The unit specification shows this as a group-based assessment, but I have had to alter it to allow for late arrivals of students, those who are still isolating and those who are witing for Visa clearance. This was approved by the Head of UTA and the Engineering Department Education Lead.
You will investigate, ideate and propose a new product from ONE of the following categories:
• Consumer electronics
• Camping accessory / equipment
• Mobility aid for a disabled person
• Communications device
• Kitchen product
• Cycling accessory
You are advised to read this publication which lists several innovation types, examples, and tactics they use to be successful. Please do not just rehash one of these as I know what they are! https://www.bigredcloud.com/the-ten-types-of-innovation/
This unit is titled ‘Engineering Design for Innovation’ but you should approach the task by reordering these words to follow a workflow that asks you to Innovate, Design and Engineer. For this, read:
Innovate: Create a product that is entirely new or the reimagining of an existing product
Design: Spend time to design and refine the product
Engineer: Whatever you innovate and design, it still needs to be manufactured using engineering processes Remember: Consider the very important points around desirability, viability and feasabiity.
Remember: The principles about design thinking. Take a step back and consider the human perspective, just like you did with the electric scooter concept model we worked through in the Monday workshop.
There is a useful link for this HERE
Also use the Double-Diamond approach to asking better questions from the initial problem definition
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUBMIT
You will carry out the above stages to produce a PowerPoint slide-deck with annotated voiceover. This should be limited to 20 slides and within it you should include the following sections:
• Title slide with your name, course and MMUID
• Identification of the product type you wish to create and define the problem or challenge you want to address
• Discovery stage to include Initial product ideation and insights into the problem (Think drawings, sketches, free-flowing ideas)
• Define stage where you hone-in one your preferred solution and explain why you chose this, how it addresses the problem definition better than others.
• Develop stage where you finalise detail sketches, model them in CAD or make a physical prototype using the Blue Room
• Assessment of costing and manufacturability
• Assessment of life cycle and sustainability of your proposed product (Circular economy: see end)
Your slide deck should make use of a wide variety of imagery, from both the discovery phase and those of the final proposed product. Any physical prototypes you make (optional) must be photographed and cannot be submitted for the assessment.
Remember: You are not being asked to make a product, only propose one after consideration of all the design thinking processes!
For this part of the assessment, once you have selected the category, try to think how you can improve or introduce a product that solves a particular problem but from the human-centred approach. Gather imagery and opinions from the internet (forums are good for user reviews, as are comments on Amazon product reviews). Capture images that show how other products in this category may be inferior or downright awful! What is difficult about them? What could be improved?
DISCOVERY AND IDEATION
Go mad here! Allow your mind to consider ANY approach to the problem that could be implemented in a new product. Divergent thinking frees your mind of the shackles of mediocrity and failure of approval. Sketch your ideas and photograph them for inclusion in your presentation. Use labels and gesture lines to indicate use and colour to provide an accent or focus.
Remember to think about desirability, feasibility and viability here (will people want it, could you afford to make it, do we have the tools and know-how to make it)
Remember the tricks that Jason taught you about views (from the ant, from the giant)
PRODUCT SELECTION AND DEVELOPMENT
Once you have all your different ideas, drill down or scope down the focus to the original problem definition to arrive at one proposed design that best satisfies the problem definition. How does it beat all the others you considered? What should your product do? What are its credentials around circular economy and sustainability? How does your product capture the necessary key functionality?
Create some quality imagery of your product which shows important features, general sizing and how it would be used. You can use manual or digital sketching or CAD or a mixture of all to communicate your design. You could even create a small prototype to convey your design ideas.
PRESENTATION BUILDING
LinkedIn Courses to help with presentations
Designing a presentation (56 mins)
PowerPoint Essential Training (2hr 37 mins)
8 ways to make your presentation stand out (36 mins)
PowerPoint: Designing better slides
(1hr 33mins)
All of these above courses will award a certificate of
completion that you can add to your LinkedIn profile
Draw together all your research, your imagery and supporting documentation. You should be able to articulate the environmental and manufacturing considerations for your proposal. You should also put together a brief financial overview, for example how much it might cost to make, how much it would sell for and an indication of market size.
Bring all your content to build your PowerPoint presentation. Make maximum use of imagery and minimal text to make a slide deck that explains all the above stages.
You will record a voiceover for it so please do not just read off the screen. A presentation should only make sense with your voice accompanying it.
Take some guidance from the master of presentations, the late Apple CEO, Steve Jobs

R-LADDER OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
The unit leader will answer queries about the assignment during the timetabled workshop classes on a Monday and on the Thursday afternoon drop-in from 12pm to 1pm using this LINK. Advice given during these sessions and feedback on any work you present will not count towards your final grade.
WHAT IS BEING ASSESSED?
On successful completion of this course unit, students will be able to:
Criteria Evidence
1 Validate fundamental engineering principles when selecting new and emerging technologies for design solutions. Background research, product design specification and evaluation of proposal
2 Assess the influence of commercial and social constraints and opportunities on the design process. Background research, market analysis, product selection
3 Justify and, where appropriate, quantify the sustainability of a design solution. Life cycle analysis, circular economy, sustainability, manufacturing considerations
4 Contribute to a design solution, exercising initiative Monday workshop sessions and lectures and personal responsibility, as a member of a design team.
This piece of coursework specifically addresses learning outcomes 1,2 and 3.
ASSESSMENT BREAKDOWN
MMU uses a grading system known as University Standard Descriptors (USD’s) and these have 7 different criteria that may be used to grade an assessment. The link to the unmodified sheet is here and the criteria for each grade range are then reworded to fit the assessment.
For this assessment, we use 5 of these USD’s 1,2,3,6 & 7 on the following weightings. Weightings simply denotes the ‘amount’ that each USD contributes to the overall score for the assessment.
1 2 3 6 7
Apply skills of critical analysis to real world situations within a defined range of contexts. Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism* eg initiative, creativity, motivation, professional practice and selfmanagement. Express ideas effectively and communicate information appropriately and accurately using a range of media including ICT. Find, evaluate, synthesise and use information from a variety of sources. Articulate an awareness of the social and community contexts within their disciplinary field.
How each of these relate to this assessment (cont …)
How you evaluate the problem definition and generate an original solution using engineering theory and practices. How you have managed to be creative to provide a number of solutions to the problem definition whilst evaluating your own practice. Your PowerPoint presentation and voiceover The quality, relevance and ‘making sense’ of background research in order to arrive at a solution to the problem definition. How you have considered and addressed circular economy,
sustainability, feasibility, viability and desirability in your proposal
How much each of these contribute to your grade
