UGB115: Learning from Practice & Reflection

ASSESSMENT: PORTFOLIO STAGE 2

Individual Reflective Essay – 70% of total module grade

TASK:

In this module you were required to work in groups to research, plan, implement and evaluate an activity or event with charitable, social and/or educational outcomes.

You are now required to examine your learning and development primarily during the process of that event/activity utilising the tools and techniques provided throughout the module.

In addition, you may also consider other aspects and elements of your learning and development beyond this activity, for example other modules, University so far and extra-curricular study/participation.

1. REFLECTIVE ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS

‘Individually, students will reflect upon their experience, and evaluate their own development and examine the issues encountered in the progression of their event or activity.’

1. You must show a suitable understanding of your learning from the experiences encountered in this process, focusing on the following aspects:
• Your learning styles(s) and how you examined & developed these
• Your preferred & actual role(s) and how you developed these & contributed to the group
• How you developed or changed your behaviours
• How you developed your skills – both existing & new
• The extent to which you understand yourself & your learning
• The improvements you have made and still need to make

Additionally, you may consider aspects outside of this process, for example other modules, level 1 in general, University life and extra-curricular programmes (such as languages, sports), and examine (compare and contrast) these experiences with those in this module.

2. You MUST utilise a selection of the theory covered & evidence accumulated through the module and incorporate this into your essay. This should include:

4. Structure and Presentation

You may choose to structure your essay by the theory/models (above) or by the stages in your activity/event process (Planning, Implementation & Evaluation)

Include both an introduction (the purpose of the essay & importance of the topic) & a conclusion.

In your conclusion, you MUST highlight the key aspects of your learning (Lessons learned) and how you will do better/differently in future situations. You may look ahead to level 2 and beyond.

2. UGB115 PORTFOLIO PHASE 2 – REFLECTIVE ESSAY ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The following learning outcomes will be tested from this assessment:

Knowledge
1. Knowledge of planning, implementation and evaluation process
2. Understanding of experiential learning

Skills
3. Effective transferable skills, such as organisational, research, decision making, communication, IT, appropriate numeracy and group work
4. Self- evaluation and reflection skills

3. SUBMISSION DETAILS

If you do not submit your work without valid mitigation (see below), you may not be able to progress to Level 2.

2. Your work must be submitted by the deadline of 5pm on the 25th April 2014.

4. EXTENUATING / MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES
If you are affected by any extenuating circumstances and cannot submit your work, for example illness or severe personal difficulties, you must inform your module leader, personal tutor or programme leader immediately. You should submit a mitigation form, available from reception. Mitigation forms must be accompanied by appropriate supporting evidence such as a sick note from your GP.
