UNCC100 - SUPPLEMENTARY ASSESSMENT

“Hear their Cry!”
A number of prominent advocates have attempted to raise awareness of the plight of migrants and refugees in Australia, highlighting the price many have to pay for their perseverance in searching for a new home in which can live safely, with their families. These advocates note that many leave wartorn homelands looking for a better future for themselves and their families - they are forced to leave their homes for many reasons, including these: murderous regimes, unstable governments, natural disasters, conflicts and wars, political oppression, famine, terrorism and poverty.
They point out that some estimates tell us that there are over sixty million violently or involuntarily displaced people, throughout the world. They emphasize the importance of an action plan and an action day (see http://cathnews.com/cathnews/32387-key-to-welcoming-migrants-is-to-hear-theircry )
They also note how much can be done at grassroots levels by individuals, groups and organizations for example, by providing aid, assistance with resettlement, education, health care, legal aid, and so on.
They note the major importance of welcoming and helping those who are in need of assistance from Australians, and indeed from Australia; the importance of a space where these people can live safely and securely, without the threat of violence, oppression, persecution, estrangement or alienation. They call on all Australians to hear the cry of the traumatized and the helpless among these migrant and refugee populations, and to respond in humanitarian and compassionate ways.
Write a reflection (you may use essay form or subheadings in your answer) using the following four guidelines.

For this assessment you are required to:
1. Identify 3-5 Catholic Social Thought Principles that relate to the pursuit of more just conditions in the example above (refer to the passage above in your reflection).
2. Define the principles you have selected briefly and explain why you believe these principles of CST have particular relevance to this issue.
3. Using the passage above, explain how the concepts of self and community are interrelated, using the concepts of human flourishing, Ubuntu or the “Golden Rule” in your discussion.
4. Explain how issues relating to the dignity of the human person and the realization of the common good here, may be addressed by you in your current or future professional practice.
