Expository Essay – 2020 Term 1
Due by: 11.50 pm Friday 8th of May 2020 (end week 9), via Turnitin.
Weighting: 30%
Length: 1,000 words (plus or minus 10% or penalties apply. Do not include titles or reference list in your word count).
Note that only sources from the reference list supplied are to be used in the plan and the final essay. No other sources may be used unless written approval (email) is obtained from your class teacher.
Essay Topic: - Choice of Topics
1. Outline the debate on the role of Character and IQ in cognitive development and explain how brain plasticity fits into the debate. Also briefly evaluate the debate.
or
2. Outline the debate on the positive and negative effects of screen technology on cognitive development and explain how the concept of brain plasticity fits into this debate. Also briefly evaluate the debate.
Guidelines
• Choose one of the two debates.
• Choose a topic that matches your interests and you can answer well. Remember, you will also need to do an independent oral presentation from within that topic.
• You must include at least five in-text citations within the body of your essay which refer to research or facts that support the arguments presented. A minimum of three different sources (a maximum of six) is required.
• You must include a cover page with your essay that shows:
Your name
Your student number
Your teacher’s name
The title of your essay
The word count (excluding cover page and reference list)
• Your essay must be typed using 12 point font, with double line spacing, standard margins and in black ink only.
• You must include a reference list with your essay in WSU Harvard Style.
• The reference list must be on a separate page using single line spacing and with a double line space between each entry.
• For the structure of the essay, refer to the essay plan template.
Penalties
• Penalties for plagiarism will be applied based on the extent of matching as identified by Turnitin after adjusting to exclude small matches, the Title Page, the Reference List, in-text references and any other matches (text) that do not constitute plagiarism
• A penalty of 10% per calendar day applies for submissions made after the due date and time unless an extension has been granted
• A penalty of 10% will be deducted from your final mark for texts which are outside the range of plus or minus 10% of the stipulated word length. The word length does not include the title page or reference list
Notes
You should choose your topic and begin your reading and note-taking as early as possible. Your essay plan will help you to write the essay.
It is highly recommended that you submit your essay through Turnitin and check for matchings at least once before the final submission date, as penalties for poor paraphrasing are severe.
Repeating Students: You must NOT select the same question as previously.
