Q7. -Differences in people that might make me uncomfortable-
In regard to above statement, try to think of two (2) types of people that you may feel
awkward/uncomfortable around. There can be many reasons why we might feel awkward around people. You might not be accustomed to being around certain groups of people. or you may even have grown up in a family/school/community that brought you into conflict with people who were different in some way. Remember that there are many areas of life where differences can be expressed. You may want to spend some time thinking about how those differences have made you feel uncomfortable in the past. Sometimes it is difficult to identify assumptions because we think of them as true, or pay little attention to the way we think. This may not be an easy task, but it can be valuable to identify preconceptions that you did not realize you had. Now answer the following questions for each person:

SCENARIO I
Wayan works for a clinic in Sydney. His family has an Indonesian background. His manager is constantly rude to him and although he is 32 years old, he is often referred to as 'boy'. His boss sometimes makes comments about Wayan's appearance as well as making him clean the toilets at the end of the day (which is not part of his job description). Wayan is afraid that if he left this job he would have difficulty finding another job.
When Wayan asked his boss if he could receive leadership training, his boss replied 'Sorry, but we don't think you are management material'. In addition to this, Wayan's fellow workers who began working with the organization at the same time as he did received a considerable amount of workplace training and were already promoted.
Wayan has heard from other nurses that his boss is not a fan of overseas workers. It is quite clear that his manager and the workplace has treated Wayan unfairly purely based on his racial background.
I. What can Wayan do about this situation?
2. What Laws/Acts has Wayan's manager broken?
3. What can the clinic do to support Wayan's sense of identity?
4. If Wayan reports these events, what might the organization and/or manager be required to do?

SCENARIO 2
Jenny is an Enrolled nurse who was about to start her lunch time medication round at 12:00 noon. She required a fruit puree to assist with the administration of medication (to give to residents who were on crushed medications). She went to the kitchen to get a fresh fruit puree. While in the kitchen, Jenny heard Mary's (chef) entire conversation. During this time, Jenny also observed all mentioned further in this scenario.
-The cultural mix of our facility has changed over the last few years from a mono-cultural environment to a culturally diverse one and I am not happy about having to deal with the dietary implications. There so many non-culturally based food intolerance problems also and menu planning has become more difficult. The residents may as well go out and get their own food if they can't just eat what I make. I like the residents to have proper food with proper taste and I don't have the time to make three different meals!-.
There have been two recent problems. The first was where beef stock was used in a vegetable soup which was served to all the residents when three of them were vegetarian. A staff member only found out when she had some of the soup for her lunch and Mary said that beef stock really makes a difference to die taste. The residents are not aware this has occurred. In the other case, small pieces of bacon were in a quiche served to a man who does not eat pork, although he is not a vegetarian. He removed them and mentioned it to his family who were unhappy about it.
Mary is a great cook who has been working in the service industry for 15 years. She specializes in making a range of delicious meals for the residents and encourages them to experiment with flavor and different tastes.
5. What is the core of the problem?
6. What strategies can be used to eliminate bias and discrimination?
7. When you identified these issues, you have a responsibility to apply an appropriate response within your scope of practice and ensuring needs of your residents are met. What are your (Enrolled Nurse) responsibilities in reporting these issues? Who would this need to be reported to and who are the appropriate people to seek assistance?
