Course: Organizational Behaviour
Assignment 1:
Word Limit: 400.
Due date: February 1,2018 @11:59 PM (MST-Canada)
Please read Chapter 3 carefully and thoroughly and respond to all 2 Activities.
Activity 1: Assess your own personal values and discuss the impact these are having on you personally, educationally, and professionally.
Instructions
a. Watch the TED Talk as indicated in the link below (http://blog.ted.com/2010/05/04/how_great_leade/).
In today's workplace, as Simon Sinek suggests, many companies can tell you what they do and can usually explain how they do it. What's often missing, however, is an understanding of WHY they do what they do. As he indicated, -I'm not talking about profits here - that's a result...that's always a result (in a for-profit scenario)-. Rather, this is a question of values—values which serve as the undercurrents which drive motivation.
b. Now go to the link on values https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTED_85.htm
c. Work through the discussion on Values by watching the video and working through the steps in determining your key values.
d. Is there anything surprising or affirming with your results?
e. Using Sinek's talk and your experience and results from identifying your key values, reflect on what it is you value. How do values drive what you do? To what extent are your values supporting and guiding your current decision to take a business program? What about the future?
f. How is the business program you are enrolled here at NAIT support you in upholding your key values? In other words, why are you taking this course (and program) right now, and why do you want to become a business person? Hint: -To get a good job- doesn't constitute a response.
This question requires you to search introspectively for who you are and assess how true you are to your individual values as a person making professional decisions.
Activity 2: Is it a Bribe or a Gift (Discussion)
Read the Ethical Dilemma Exercises on p. 115.
Discuss what you would do and why.
Assignment 2:
Word Limit: 500.
Due date: February 1,2018 @11:59 PM (MST-Canada)
Please read Chapter 3 carefully and thoroughly and respond to all Activities.
Activity 1: A Uniquely 'Canadian' Workplace? (Discussion)
Refer to your textbook section Hofstede Framework for Assessing Cultures.
The United States is often considered the most individualistic nation-state in the world, complete with low power distance, low uncertainty avoidance, etc. while Eastern European and many Asian nations are thought of as much more collectivist, complete with high-power distance, high uncertainty avoidance, etc.
While there remains much in the way of discussion, little has been written about Canada on this topic. However, much can be gained by referring directly to Geert Hofstede's cultural website:
http://geert-hofstede.com/national-culture.html
Discuss what you believe to be the 'Canadian' perspective on values as you comment specifically on the ranking and or index related to Canada (p. 81) and Hofstede's website. Hofstede
Consider:
a. What values do you believe are apparent in the Canadian workplace? In this discussion forum refer to Exhibit 3-1 or you can use the link on Hofstede to identify and record each value dimension for Canada (power distance, individualism vs. collectivism, masculinity vs femininity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term vs. short-term orientation) as high (index of 50 or greater) or low (less than 50).
Discuss how these value dimensions translate to the Canadian work place. Are they evident where you work?
b. To explore how these differ/align with other areas of the world choose a country listed in Exhibit 3-1. You can use the Hofstede link as well. You will then identify and record each value dimension (power distance, individualism vs. collectivism, masculinity vs. femininity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term vs. short-term orientation) as high (index of 50 or greater) or low (less than 50). Discuss what these results infer about the values in the work place in each of these countries.
Activity 3 - Attitudes
Write in reference to content from Page 92 to page 101. You can refer to personal experiences; share your knowledge, stories, and experiences as vivid as possible. You can use any style to discuss these topics
Part 1: (Attitudes - Components of an Attitude), Job Satisfaction (What causes job satisfaction?, Job Satisfaction and Productivity, Job satisfaction and Organizational Citizenship Behaviour, Job Satisfaction and Customer Satisfaction, Job Satisfaction and Absenteeism and Turnover.
